How Does Your Insurance Company Support Your Pregnancy?

Often, when I think about insurance companies, it comes with a feeling of frustration. While I am always grateful for any cost savings and coverage we get from our insurance, it can be confusing to determine what medical services are covered completely, mostly, or not at all. When you do not know what coverage you have, it can be hard to plan and budget for health costs, and it can be alarming when the medical bills arrive.

In my experience, most regular prenatal expenses (meaning regular non-emergent prenatal visits with your provider and non-complicated births and hospital stays) are generally covered by insurance to some extent depending on your specific plan. It is always acceptable to call your insurance company to check to see if and how much health care services are covered.

I recently discovered that my specific insurance company has a program for pregnant moms to help provide more education about insurance benefits and give tips for healthy pregnancies. (My insurance company will go unnamed but you are welcome to private message me on Instagram or Facebook for more information.) Once I signed up for this program, I had access to articles instructing how to determine level of coverage and providing information on common pregnancy concerns such as hypertension, gestational diabetes, and postpartum depression. It also provided a link to purchase breast pumps that are complete covered by my insurance! I was super impressed by this source of patient education and hope so many moms with this insurance take advantage of this program.

Not only did they provide these resources, but I was also sent a welcome box that had a free blood pressure monitor and a sleep sack for my baby!  (Picture shown below.)

My encouragement to you is to find out if your insurance company has a program similar to this one and then take advantage of it! Feel free to comment below with how your insurance company is supporting you or how it has in the past.

I hope this was helpful. Let me know if you have any questions!
